The number of notes in ascending movements i.e, arohi and descending movements i.e. avarohi of a raga is called its jati. There are 3 basic jatis,

 

1. Sampoorna-containing 7 notes,

2. Shaudava-containing 6 notes and

3. Audava-containing 5 notes.

 

In total 9 jatis are possible.They are as follows-

 

1.Sampooran-sampooran - ragas in this classification will have all the 7 notes in arohi and also 7 notes in avarohi. Example in Raga Bilawal.

2.Sampooran-shaudava -ragas in this jati will have 7 notes while arohi and 6 notes in avarohi. Example Raga Darbari kanada.

3.Sampooran-audava -ragas in this jati will have 7 notes in arohi and 5 notes in avarohi.

4.Shaudava-sampooran -ragas in this jati will have 6 notes in arohi and 7 notes in avarohi. Example Raga Khammaj.

5.Shaudava-shaudava -ragas in this jati will have 6 notes in ascending and 6 notes in descending. Example Raga Bahar.

6.Shaudava-audava -ragas in this jati will have 6 notes in arohi and 5 notes in avarohi.

7.Audava-sampooran -ragas in this jati will have 5 notes in arohi and 7 notes in avarohi. Example-Raga Asawari.

8.Audava-shaudava -ragas in this jati will have 5 notes in arohi and 6 notes in avarohi.

9.Audava-audava -ragas in this jati will have 5 notes in arohi and 5 in avarohi. Example-Raga Deshkar.

 

Jati is said to be the essence of a raga and is one of the main characterestics of raga.
